PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BNI, has reaffirmed its commitment to repaying the funds belonging to members of the Aek Nabara Parish Credit Union (CU) in Rantauprapat, North Sumatra, in accordance with the findings of the law enforcement investigation. Based on the latest developments in the police investigation, the amount of funds embezzled in this case is estimated to be approximately Rp28 billion.
Munadi Herlambang, Director of Human Capital & Compliance at BNI, stated that BNI understands and shares the concerns and the impact experienced by the members of the Aek Nabara Parish Credit Union. The company also apologizes for this incident and is committed to resolving the refund of customer funds in accordance with the progress of the legal proceedings.
“The ongoing investigation has clarified the extent of the losses, which serves as the basis for BNI to process the reimbursement of funds in a timely, measured, and accountable manner,” said Munadi.
The refund process will be set forth in a legal agreement signed by both parties, as part of a transparent and accountable resolution mechanism designed to provide certainty, protection, and a clear legal basis for all parties.
Munadi further emphasized that, since the case first came to light in February 2026, BNI has been actively taking steps to resolve the matter, including returning the initial funds to the Aek Nabara Parish Credit Union as a gesture of good faith and responsibility toward its customers.
“From the very beginning, BNI has not sat idly by. We have continued to carefully manage the resolution process to ensure that the outcome is not only swift but also legally valid and provides certainty for all parties,” he added.
On that occasion, Munadi also confirmed that this case came to light as a result of the company’s internal audit and was immediately followed up with a report to law enforcement authorities. In the course of the investigation, the perpetrator has been named a suspect and taken into custody by the police.
The products used by the perpetrator are not official BNI products and have never been recorded in the company’s operational system. This incident constitutes an individual act carried out outside the bank’s official systems, authority, and procedures.
He also assured that all customer funds held in BNI’s official products remain safe and have not been affected by this incident.
Meanwhile, Rian Eriana Kaslan, Director of Network & Retail Funding at BNI, emphasized the importance of improving financial literacy among the public as a preventive measure against potential similar crimes.
The public is advised to avoid offers that do not align with standard banking practices, such as promises of unreasonably high interest rates or transactions outside official channels.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant, especially regarding investment offers that do not go through official banking channels. Make sure that all products and transactions are conducted through official, verifiable channels,” said Rian.
He also urged the public not to be easily provoked by unverified information and to always exercise caution in all financial transactions.
“Customers can verify this through BNI’s official website, the wondr by BNI app, by contacting BNI Call, or by visiting the nearest branch to ensure the authenticity of the products and services,” he added.
BNI will continue to oversee this process until its completion, while upholding the principles of prudence, transparency, and consumer protection in accordance with applicable regulations.
