BNI Warns Customers to Be Wary of Vishing and Phishing, Stressing the Importance of Protecting Personal Data

PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BNI, is stepping up public education efforts regarding the rise in cybercrime, particularly vishing, phishing, and social engineering targeting users of digital services such as BNIdirect. Customers are urged to be more vigilant and not to easily share sensitive data with unverified parties.

BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo emphasized that technological advancements have been accompanied by an increasing variety of fraud schemes. “The public needs to understand these various fraud schemes so they can be more vigilant and not easily hand over personal data to irresponsible parties,” Okki said in a written statement.

He explained that one common method is vishing, or voice phishing—a type of telephone scam in which the perpetrator pretends to be a bank employee. In practice, the perpetrator typically mentions the victim’s name and creates a sense of urgency, such as by claiming there has been a suspicious transaction, in order to request sensitive information like company IDs, user IDs, passwords, and even token codes. This information is then used to access accounts and conduct unauthorized transactions.

In addition, there is also a phishing scheme carried out through fake websites that mimic official banking portals. Victims are directed to enter sensitive data, which is then misused by the perpetrators. Another scheme to watch out for is social engineering, a psychological manipulation technique in which perpetrators pose as bank employees to obtain confidential information such as OTP codes, tokens, or passwords.

BNI emphasizes the importance of vigilance and verification in all interactions related to digital services. Customers are advised to access services only through official websites such as bnidirect.bni.co.id or directbisnis.bni.co.id, and to avoid clicking on suspicious links sent via text messages, emails, or messaging apps.

In addition, customers are advised not to store passwords on their devices, to change their passwords regularly, and never to share OTP codes or tokens with anyone, including individuals claiming to represent the bank. These steps are considered crucial for preventing unauthorized access to accounts.

BNI also reminds the public to always verify information through the company’s official channels, including its official website at http://www.bni.co.id, to ensure the authenticity of any information received and avoid potential fraud.

Through this initiative to improve digital security literacy, BNI hopes that the public will gain a better understanding of cybercrime patterns and be able to protect themselves from potential financial losses. Ongoing education is considered key to ensuring the security of digital transactions while strengthening customer trust in banking services.
