The consistent and sustained development of young Indonesian athletes, carried out by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) with the support of PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BNI, has once again yielded impressive results.
The young Indonesian men’s doubles pair Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin reached a major milestone in their careers by finishing as runners-up at the Indonesia Open 2026. This achievement is particularly special because it marked Raymond and Joaquin’s first final at the BWF World Tour Super 1000 level, the highest tier in the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) regular tournament series.
Amid fierce competition in international badminton, the emergence of Raymond/Joaquin has brought new optimism for the future of men’s doubles and the next generation of national badminton players.
BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo said that Raymond and Joaquin’s achievements are clear proof that a consistently implemented youth development program can produce players who are ready to compete at the highest international level.
“Raymond and Joaquin’s success in reaching their first Super 1000 final is a proud achievement. It shows that the renewal of Indonesian athletes is ongoing and capable of producing young talents who are ready to play a significant role on the international stage,” said Okki.
Raymond and Joaquin’s run to the Indonesia Open 2026 final is a clear demonstration of the quality of Indonesia’s new generation of badminton players. In that tournament, the pair managed to defeat several top-ranked international teams and displayed a level of maturity on the court that belies their age.
Although they had to settle for second place, Raymond and Joaquin’s performance throughout the Indonesia Open 2026 still deserves high praise. Facing the Malaysian pair and seventh seeds of the tournament, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, in the final, the young Indonesian duo demonstrated competitiveness, mental toughness, and promising skills at the highest level of world badminton.
Reaching the final of the BWF World Tour Super 1000 for the first time marks a significant milestone in Raymond and Joaquin’s careers and underscores their immense potential as part of a new generation of Indonesian men’s doubles players ready to compete with the world’s elite pairs.
For Raymond/Joaquin, the Malaysian pair is no stranger. Before the final, the two pairs had faced each other twice, with an even record of one win apiece. In their most recent meeting at the 2026 Indonesia Masters, held at Istora Senayan last January, Raymond/Joaquin also had to concede defeat to Goh/Nur.
According to Okki, this achievement inspires optimism about the future of Indonesian badminton. The presence of young athletes capable of competing at the world’s elite level is a key asset for maintaining Indonesia’s competitiveness amid increasingly fierce international competition.
“Reaching the final of a Super 1000 tournament at such a young age is a very positive achievement. The experience of competing in the final of a top-tier tournament will be a valuable asset for Raymond and Joaquin as they continue to develop and achieve even greater success in the future,” Okki emphasized.
As a strategic partner of PBSI, BNI consistently supports various athlete development programs and competitions that play a vital role in the development of national badminton. This commitment aligns with BNI’s role in supporting the development of high-caliber human resources capable of making a positive contribution to Indonesia.
For BNI, the achievements Raymond and Joaquin have made to date are the result of a long-term collaboration that is expected to continue strengthening the development of new talent and the competitiveness of Indonesian badminton on the world stage.
