In New Normal Adaptation, IKA Universitas Brawijaya Invites People Not to Be Afraid of Donating Blood in Pandemic Period

Jakarta, 23 August 2020 - The blood stock at the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has decreased due to an imbalance between blood needs and the number of donors. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Indonesia, people have been afraid to donate blood. For this reason, the Universitas Brawijaya Alumni Association (IKA UB), invites people to donate blood, while still paying attention to health protocols.

The invitation was conveyed, because there are still many patients who need additional routine blood such as thalassemia sufferers. Therefore, in the framework of the Month of Service for the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, the Universitas Brawijaya Alumni Association was encouraged to hold a blood donation activity entitled "PMI Screaming" during this pandemic.

This activity will be carried out by following the applicable health protocols so that donors are protected from the risk of transmitting COVID-19.

This blood donor activity was attended by the Daily Executive of the IKA UB, Sis Apik Wijayanto, the General Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Jusuf Kalla, and the COVID-19 Volunteer Coordinator, Andre Rahadian, as well as of course the alumni of Universitas Brawijaya and various communities.

"Let's start donating blood again in this new adaptation era. All activities will be accompanied by strict health protocols. All donors will get free rapid test," said the Daily Executive of IKA UB, Sis Apik Wijayanto, through an official statement.

Sis Apik Wijayanto added, the new normal adaptation which is also part of the health protocol in this activity, is the replacement of bedding and spraying disinfectant for each donor change. He stated, now is the time to dare to share without fear.

"With high determination and still adhering to health protocols, we invite all humanitarian fighters to dare to donor during the pandemic, we should not be silent seeing our brothers have trouble getting blood," continued Dida Sarkan as the Chief Executive of IKA UB Blood Donation.

This blood donor activity was held on Sunday, 23 August 2020, from 08.00 to 13.00 WIB at Gelora Bung Karno. "We did this preparation in 3 weeks. We did not expect that the donor interest was still very high. This can be seen from the number of applicants that almost reached 600 potential donors consisting of public, the automotive community, the runner community, the service community, and so on. Even after our registration was closed, there were still many donors who contacted us to join. Our highest appreciation goes to the humanitarian fighters. On behalf of the committee, I apologize if there are still many donors that we cannot accommodate due to the pandemic atmosphere, where we have to implement physical distancing. Insha Allah, we will hold this event on an on going basis. In this event, the Universitas Brawijaya Alumni Association donated Rp 100,000,000.- in cash to PMI Blood Transfusion Unit DKI Jakarta," said Dida Sarkan.

"It is hoped that with this activity the community will no longer be afraid to donate blood. Because a drop of blood from a donor can save other people's lives,” said Sis Apik Wijayanto.

Apart from blood donor activity, IKA UB also held Virtual Talk : Physical and Economic Health in the New Normal Era Adaptation. This online discussion discusses safety reviews that support the movement process of the Indonesian economy.
