BNI Plants 78,000 Mangrove Seedlings in Pangpang Bay for 78th Anniversary

(22/6/2024) - PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI held an activity to plant 78,000 mangrove seedlings in order to welcome the 78th Anniversary (HUT).

The planting of 78,000 mangrove seedlings was carried out as a form of support for the declaration of the Green Economy and in line with BNI's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, BNI Go Green, by realizing program sustainability for the environment through reforestation program activities that have been consistently carried out by BNI Group since several years ago.

The event was held in Tegalpare Hamlet, Wringinputih Village, Muncar Sub-Regency, with Pokmaswas Baret Banyuwangi, East Java, on Saturday (22/6/2024).

BNI Network and Services Director Ronny Venir, all Division Heads, and BNI Regional Heads attended the event. In addition, the event was also attended by representatives of BNI Subsidiary Company Directors.

In his remarks, Ronny stated that this occasion became a series of activities to commemorate BNI's 78th anniversary, with the goal of supporting efforts to tackle climate change through Indonesia's Net Zero Emission (NZE) target in 2060. BNI Group also has a decarbonization roadmap that includes establishing an operational NZE target in 2028 and a financing NZE target in 2060.

Ronny explained that planting trees is one of the actions that can be taken to address climate change and can also hold carbon emissions (CO2), reduce earth temperatures, reduce soil erosion, to protect ecosystems and absorb air pollutants.

“Especially for mangroves, it also serves to prevent abrasion,” he said.

Ronny explained that the purpose of the mangrove planting program is not only to support the government's NZE program, but also to restore the biodiversity of Pangpang Bay so that local fishermen no longer need to go fishing until the far out to sea, which has an impact on the time and economy of fishermen around Pangpang Bay.

According to Ronny, through the Regeneration movement (nursery, planting and maintenance) of mangrove forests in Pangpang Bay, BNI Group is participating in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing climate change.

In its implementation, Ronny said, this mangrove forest regeneration not only improves the marine ecosystem but also provides economic benefits for the local community.

“The regeneration of mangrove forests is expected to create a diverse ecosystem in the surrounding area so that it can create an economy for the local community,” he said.

On the same occasion, BNI symbolically laid the first stone for assistance in the construction of musala and toilet in Muncar Village, Teluk Pangpang, Banyuwangi, East Java.

“With this assistance, it is hoped that it can facilitate fishermen and the community to worship and maintain cleanliness while in the Pangpang Bay area,” concluded Ronny.

BNI Group is committed to implementing sustainability principles in business operations, to ensure the Earth’s long-term viability.
