From Ecosystem to Economy, BNI Builds the Future Thru Mangrove Forests

PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental preservation and climate change mitigation thru concrete actions in mangrove forest conservation, in line with the global spirit of commemorating World Mangrove Day, which falls on July 26.

BNI Deputy President Director Alexandra Askandar, stated that throughout 2024 until mid-2025, BNI has planted mangrove trees on an area of 60 hectares spread across two main conservation areas, namely Teluk Pangpang in Banyuwangi and Ekowisata Lembung in Pamekasan.

"Both locations are coastal areas with great potential in supporting the development of the Blue Carbon Ecosystem and the restoration of critical lands with high ecological value," said Xandra in a written statement.

Xandra continued, BNI implements various green initiatives thru the BNI Berbagi program, which is part of the Company's Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL). This program is carried out collaboratively by involving local communities, regional governments, and strategic partners, especially in coastal areas.

Not only from an ecological perspective, the benefits of mangroves are also directly felt by coastal communities. This ecosystem serves as an important habitat for various marine species and endemic birds, while also supporting increased catch yields for fishermen thru improved water quality. Hence, mangrove conservation also creates sustainable economic impacts.

In addition to planting, BNI also builds supporting facilities such as clean water sources, worship facilities, electricity, and public toilets around the conservation site. This step not only supports the needs of the community but also promotes the development of local ecotourism based on nature conservation.

BNI believes that environmental protection is an integral part of a sustainable business strategy. Therefore, the Company will continue to strengthen synergies with various parties in implementing wide-ranging environmental initiatives.

"Conservation is not just a temporary project, but part of our long-term commitment to building a greener, more sustainable, and inclusive future," Xandra emphasized.

This step is in line with BNI's commitment to long-term sustainability, in accordance with the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). This effort is expected to create a broader positive impact on the environment, society, and the national economy.
